Tom Dorn, president of Dorn True Value Hardware, said the four family-owned stores saw sales up 25% to 30% in 2020 as people undertook homebound projects and purchased pandemic products, such as Plexiglas and masks.
The first pandemic product to disappear from the shelves at Dorn True Value Hardware stores were N95 masks customers were purchasing to send to relatives in China.
In a typically slow growth industry, Dorn expects the surge in buying to return to normal levels this year as the economy continues to reopen and normal activities resume.
Mike Thomas, manager of the Dorn Outdoor Pro Shop, sells fishing licenses at the store on Madison's West Side. The fishing goods store also experienced a large growth in sales in 2020 as the pandemic drove outdoor recreation.
