Students from Abundant Life Christian School arrive at the Dean Clinic on East Buckeye Road to meet up with their families after a shooting at the school.
The call to police came at 10:57 a.m. Monday. A second-grade teacher called 911 to report the shooting. Police had originally said it was a student, but clarified Tuesday that they realized it was a teacher.
How many people were killed?
A student, Rubi Patricia Vergara, 14, and and a teacher, Erin Michelle West, 42, were killed in the shooting. Six other people were injured, and two are in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
Madison police have identified the shooter as 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow, who went by the name Samantha. She was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Police said she had two handguns with her, and one was used in the shooting.
Police are looking into whether a "manifesto" posted on social media was written by her. A photo of Rupnow skeet shooting on her father's Facebook page contains a potential reference to the 1999 mass shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.
Was anyone else involved?
Madison Police said nobody else was involved in the shooting.
On Tuesday, a California judge issued a restraining order under California’s gun red flag law against a 20-year-old Carlsbad man. The order requires the man to turn his guns and ammunition into police. He is accused of plotting a mass shooting with Rupnow.
Has a motive been identified?
Barnes said the motive was a "combination of factors" and that he would not elaborate while police investigate. He said officers are talking to students to see if bullying was a factor.
Was a specific student or teacher targeted?
"Everyone was targeted in this incident, and everyone was put in equal danger," Barnes said.
How soon did police arrive?
Police arrived at the scene three minutes after the report of a shooting, Barnes said. Twenty-four seconds later, an officer entered the building.
Did the police fire any shots?
No. Police said authorities did not fire any shots in the incident.
Did the school have a school resource officer?
No, the school did not have metal detectors or a school resource officer.
