A month after a student opened fire at Abundant Life Christian School, another killed a classmate in Nashville. Both were active in an internet subculture that glorifies mass shooters.

What started as a local benefit Jan. 6 grew to include 80 Culver's restaurants statewide, the company said.

Among the new details: Police found 21 shell casings and two firearms at the scene but believe only one was used.

Three people were killed, including the shooter, and six more physically injured. But the trauma, we know, reverberates far beyond the school. 

Erin West was "super generous, just authentic," said Rob Warren, founding pastor of Doxa Church on Madison's South Side.

The shooter largely kept to herself and may have had a fascination with mass killings.

Funerals have been set for a student and a teacher who were killed in a school shooting Monday at Abundant Life Christian School. 

The man planned an attack at a Carlsbad, California, government building in conjunction with the Madison attack, according to a local TV station.

Rubi Patricia Vergara, 14, and Erin Michelle West, 42, were killed Monday when a 15-year-old student opened fire in a classroom.

The Speak Up, Speak Out hotline fielded more than 5,200 tips in the 2023-24 school year — marking a 40% increase from the previous year.

“(Abundant Life faculty and students) have drills every month," parent Rebekah Smith said. "Our daughter was sick of practicing for (an) active shooter.”

Along with the flowers and candles, two crosses have been erected where well-wishers can leave their sentiments.

Even though students and teachers at Abundant Life Christian School had been trained with active shooter drills, metal detectors could have helped, Masood Akhtar said.

School families and friends filled the church that shares a campus with Abundant Life Christian School and other Madison residents gathered on Capitol Square, to grieve and remember.

The incident came hours after the fatal shootings at Abundant Life Christian School less than two miles away, but there was no indication of any connection to that tragedy.

"Enough is enough,” Madison police Chief Shon Barnes said of Monday's shooting. “We have to come together to do everything we can to support our students."

Parents and other relatives waited near the scene of the school shooting in Madison, worried about their children inside the school.

A second grade teacher called police at 10:57 a.m. to report the shooting.

"It is like a family because it's church and a lot of us met each other at church," Dana Pellebon said.

The school participates in the state's school voucher program.

State and local officials offered statements ranging from condolences and prayers to frustration and calls for action in the wake of another school shooting.
