In a training exercise on Lake Monona at the mouth of the Yahara River, the Madison Fire Department's Lake Rescue Team practices rescuing a fellow firefighter in the water. Wearing cold-water survival suits, team members train regularly for a variety of situations throughout Dane County.

The Yapper, a 20-foot air boat named after former Lt. Craig Yapp, who helped create the Lake Rescue Team in 1983, is prepared to respond to an ice skater who had fallen through the ice in January. Other members of the Lake Rescue Team reached the skater before the boat was deployed.
