Amid bitterly cold weather, Daniel Sandlin, 23, said he's been sharing a tent with his mother and two dogs, including Caesar, in a wooded area on the Far East Side of Madison. Sandlin said he was born and raised in Madison but has troubled relations with the rest of his family. He was hoping to find indoor shelter Tuesday night. His mother was at work earlier Tuesday cleaning hotel rooms.

Daniel Sandlin was relying on a tarp-covered tent, portable heater, blankets and the company of two dogs Tuesday to keep from freezing as temperatures hovered around zero at an illegal Far East Side campsite he often shares with his mother.
Erica Bennett with her 1-year-old son, Silas, at the First United Methodist Church's warming center Tuesday. Bennett, who is homeless with two young children, was glad for another place to spend the day after cold weather created crowding at her normal day shelter, The Beacon.
