Lisa Keenan was reunited Monday with Pat Klingelhoets, who rescued her after she fell through the ice Thursday on Lake Mendota’s Spring Harbor. Keenan was walking her 4-month-old yellow Labrador, Gracie, when the incident happened near the end of Harbor Court, above. Klingelhoets was ice fishing nearby when he heard Keenan's cries for help.
A drainage pipe with a steady stream of water flows into Spring Harbor, which can make the ice near it less safe.
The Yahara River meets Lake Monona near Yahara Place Park, which creates unstable ice. While much of the lake may have sufficient ice, other parts may not be as safe, which is why officials always urge people to use caution and never assume that ice is safe.
The Madison Fire Department's lake rescue team moves toward an ice fisherman who fell through thin ice on Cherokee Marsh in late November. The marsh is a popular early ice spot for anglers. The two men who broke through were not taken to a hospital.
