Larry Meiller wears old-school headphones, chews gum during his show and has a folksy rapport with his guests and listeners on Wisconsin Public Radio. Meiller has hosted more than 13,000 broadcasts and has interacted with 350,000 callers and email recipients over the past 59 years. He will host his final broadcast on Tuesday.
Larry Meiller began his career by recording interviews in a basement studio in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, then walking the tapes over to Radio Hall. In the early 1970s, his work moved to the seventh floor of the then-new Vilas Hall.
The Barrymore Theatre on Madison’s East Side was nearly filled with fans during a special event to honor Meiller on June 3. Meiller lives just a few blocks from the venue, which allowed some of his friends to park in his driveway.
