Crone Apothecary owner and hemp farmer Phillip Scott says 98% of what Wisconsin’s hemp farmers produce each year will become illegal next November after a last-minute provision banning intoxicating hemp products was added to an agriculture funding bill to reopen the federal government after a 43-day shutdown.
The majority of what Phillip Scott sells at his North Side Madison store, Crone Apothecary, will become illegal to use next November after a federal ban on intoxicating hemp products was signed into law Wednesday night. The majority of Scott’s customers are middle-aged people and older who use THC-style products to aid in sleep, manage PTSD or general anxiety.
Crone Apothecary owner Phillip Scott works in his dispensary business on the North Side of Madison. Scott is one of numerous business owners who say they won’t be investing any additional resources into their businesses as a result of the federal ban passed Wednesday. He’d been planning to open two new stores but won’t if the ban renders most of his product unsellable next November.
