A popular spot at Interstate State Park, especially on hot days, is Lake O' the Dalles. The 25-acre lake includes a sandy beach and a beach house built with stone quarried from the park and constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.

Michael Chiappone, 25, a geology student pursuing his doctorate at the University of Minnesota, spent an early June evening making sketches of the river bottoms, noting the flows and a nearby shallow stretch that included a rocky island. Part of his work is studying how bones can move in a river before becoming buried and fossilized.

Interstate State Park has 82 campsites, including this site in the park's south campground that was occupied last month by Kevin and Tina Sparth of Menomonie. They used their Chevy Silverado to bring a camper trailer, kayaks and bikes for their six-night stay at the 1,300-acre park. "We brought it all this weekend," said Kevin Sparth, who teaches marketing at UW-Stout. "This is as big as we go."

An interpretive sign on the Silverbrook Trail at Interstate State Park details the history of the 6,000-square-foot Silberbrook Mansion, built in 1895 as a summer home. In 1956 the 200 acre estate was purchased by James and Anna Belle Rideaux, business owners, civil rights activists, socialites and residents of Rondo, a thriving Black neighborhood in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Rideauxes transformed the mansion into the St. Croix Valley Country Club to provide Rondo residents a place to socialize outside of the city. The club shuttered in 1962 and the property purchased by the state in 1970 to expand the park.
