Heartbreak in the Portage School District as Board closes 2 rural elementary schools

Chuck Vesely, a lifelong Portage resident who has always lived near the Wisconsin River, is concerned that high river levels from April rains could flood area streets and homes.
The Portage School District is closing elementary schools in Endeavor and Lewiston at the end of this school year, following voters rejection of an operating referendum that would have kept the schools open.
Residents packed the Portage School District boardroom on Monday evening as the board discussed closing Endeavor and Lewiston elementary schools. Ultimately, the School Board voted 6-1 to close the schools at the end of this school year.
Renee Sainsbury, a Portage resident who has sent all four of her children to Endeavor Elementary School, said she will remove her kids from the District after the school closes instead of send them to John Muir Elementary School in Portage.
Kelly Wakerhauser, a Portage-area resident with a 5-year-old daughter at Lewiston Elementary School, tearfully opposed the school's closure. Her daughter is the third generation in her family to attend the school. The Portage School Board voted 6-1 to close Lewiston and Endeavor elementary schools at the end of this school year.
