Ted Henderson was a big fan of Paul's Book Store on State Street. In the months leading up to the store's closing, Henderson purchased around 500 books from Paul's. The family of the late Paul Askins gifted Henderson the large wooden desk that for decades had been a work space at Paul's. It now serves as a centerpiece at Henderson's Madison Paperbacks on Atwood Avenue.
Madison Paperbacks is likely the city's smallest bookstore and has a new location, tucked away amid the artists in the Atwood Studios building at 2716 Atwood Avenue. The shop, which until last month had been in a strip mall on Milwaukee Street, specializes in used paperbacks but also sells some hardcover books, including rare first editions.
A Room of One’s Own Bookstore is seen from the entryway of Atwood Studios, home to a collection of artists and, since April, Madison Paperbacks. Both bookstores are benefiting from the close proximity and often times refer customers to the other shop.
Art made a few years ago by Ted Henderson’s daughter, Hope, hangs on the side of a bookshelf at Madison Paperbacks. “She’d want you to know that she is much better at drawing now,” joked Henderson, who has been selling used books for over 25 years.
