It’s hard to believe that the Great Taste of the Midwest has come and gone, yet again. It truly is the greatest of tastes in the region, if not the country. Hot take? Nah. Reality? Absolutely.

Our favorites
BEER BARON:
Delta Beer Lab (Madison) Orange Soda — Yes, a regular soda! Super-sweet Dreamsicle profile. I need a four-pack of this.
White Oak (Normal, Illinois) Extra Medium Mild — My favorite of several pours from traditional casks. Bring back the cask tent!
Une Année (Niles, Illinois) BA El Zacaton — I love the Mexican hot chocolate profile (or in this case mole) on a stout, and this was a perfect 2-ounce pour.
Fair State (Minneapolis) Re-Billionizing — Not every brewery can do a mixed-fermentation, wood-aged session saison, which is a shame.
Young Blood (Madison) Come Back With a Warrant — An unfiltered pilsner hopped with Zumo hops that lent a nice lime zest profile.
DRAFT QUEEN:
Field Day (North Liberty, Iowa) Czech Dark Lager — Mlìko poured and perfect. The highlight of the day!
Confluence (Des Moines, Iowa) Blue Corn Lager con Chiles — Satiable heat and the potential base for an incredible michelada, perfect for those Iowa-famous “red beers.”
Young Blood Beer Co. (Madison) Crop Top for the Homies — Stacked with tangy and vibrant tropical fruit flavors backed by juicy sweetness. Killed the hangover.
The Civil Life (St. Louis) American Brown Ale — Nostalgia and perfection from one of the best beer cities in the, er, Midwest.
Dovetail (Chicago) Vignette-Kriek — Tart Balaton cherry meets barnyard funk for an exquisite interpretation of perfection.
Public Craft (Kenosha) Honey Jalapeno Margarita — Another lightly spiced and unique banger from this brewery in back-to-back years and the husband's festival highlight.
