Madison college students camped out overnight and waited for hours ahead of J. Michael Real Estate's opening on Friday, Oct. 7. Students were looking to sign leases for the 2023-24 school year, which were first-come, first-serve.
More than two out of three UW-Madison students pay more for housing than they can afford, according to a first-ever study conducted by the city and the university.
A newly released study, funded by UW-Madison and the city of Madison, shows that nearly 70% of student off-campus housing rentals are not considered affordable based on nearly 3,600 student responses. Students say $980 a month for an apartment is what's affordable to them, while most new apartments near campus have students paying an average of $1,575 per person. Grand Central apartments has a one-bedroom student apartment listed on UW-Madison's off-campus housing website for $2,250.
