UW system would fund project to recover MIA soldiers under GOP bill

World War II veterans Henry Long and Lewis Harned took wing in the “Spirit of Wisconsin,” a World War II-era biplane at the Middleton Municipal Airport Tuesday with Dream Flights, an organization that honors veterans with complementary flights.
Legislative Republicans nixed a plan to fund a UW-Madison program that recovers the remains of missing service members, but a new proposal would require the Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents to pay for it.
Members of UW-Madison’s Missing in Action Recovery and Identification Project work in 2017 to excavate the remains of 1st Lt. Frank Fazekas’ plane, which was shot down over northern France in 1944, killing him.
