Declaring 2025 "the year of the kid," Gov. Tony Evers announced a series of initiatives Wednesday aimed at supporting young people including more access to mental health services. "If we want our kids to bring their full and best selves to our classrooms, elected officials have to start acknowledging how policy decisions and investments — or lack thereof — here in this building affect kids," the governor said in his State of the State address.
For his seventh State of the State address Wednesday, Democratic Gov. Tony Evers found a slightly more sympathetic audience, after Democrats made gains under new maps in the November election. Republicans still control the Legislature, however, and will decide which of his initiatives survive or get the ax.
Wisconsin state Rep. Supreme Moore Omokunde, D-Milwaukee, wells up as the governor and lawmakers recognize the family of the late state Rep. Jonathan Brostoff, who died by suicide last year.
