Badger’s football season came to a close in the first round of the playoffs, losing a road game 20-13 to Brookfield East.
Coming into the game both teams had a 3-3 record, but Brookfield had an important edge: they were reigning state champions after winning the Division 2 title in 2019.

For the second season in a row, the Badger football team closed out the regular season with an underdog victory in a rivalry game, winning a road game in Burlington 27-20 on Oct. 6.
At the end of the 2019 season, the Badgers defeated Waterford 17-7 despite the Wolverines entering the game with an undefeated record and a No. 2 ranking among Division 2 teams.

The truncated high school football regular season ended on Nov. 6, but a unique playoff system will debut seven days later.
Following the final week, the WIAA determined a playoff field for a two-week postseason. The games were limited to regional play due to the COVID-19 pandemic and determined using new playoff criteria and computer seeding.

ELKHORN — This fall, the Badger football team has suffered its fair share of close losses.
In week one, the Badgers were 25 yards away from the end zone with just over a minute left, but were unable to score, losing 41-39 to Westosha Central. Against Union Grove a week later, the Badgers were stopped less than a yard away from the end zone as the clock ran out in a 27-21 defeat.

Williams Bay’s football team saw its 2020 campaign come to a close Oct. 30 with a 54-21 defeat at the hands of Elkhart Lake that sealed the Bulldogs’ winless 0-6 season.
Elkhart Lake established the tone of the game early, scoring three unanswered touchdowns in the first quarter and taking a 22-0 lead by the end of the period.

It has been a trying season for the Williams Bay football team, which has lost each of its first five games of the year. The most lopsided loss came Oct. 23, as the Bulldogs lost a 70-7 road matchup against Belmont.
Things did not start off badly for the Bay, as they surprised the Braves with an onside kick and recovered the ball on the game’s opening kickoff. WBHS moved the ball down the field, picking up a few first downs. However, they eventually stalled out shy of the end zone, unable to put up points with the golden opportunity they had at the start of the game.

When the Badger football team defeated Delavan-Darien 41-21 on Oct. 9 for its first win of the year, the players and coaches hoped to pick up steam as the rest of the season went on. The following week’s game against Waterford was canceled, though, threatening to quash the Badgers’ winning momentum just as it got started.
That week away from the gridiron, however, did not hamper the Badgers too badly, as the team picked up a 14-0 win Oct. 23 over Wilmot in Lake Geneva that saw the Badger defense firing on all cylinders.

WILLIAMS BAY — It has been a tough season for the Williams Bay eight-man football team, losing its first four games. But the team’s most recent loss on Oct. 16, a 38-18 defeat against St. Mary Catholic, had its share of silver linings.
The most easily-noticed positive was on the scoreboard; the Bulldogs defense allowed its fewest points of the season while the offense scored its most.

Badger’s football team was busy preparing for to face off against one of its biggest rivals when the team got news of a nightmare scenario: The Oct. 16 game against Waterford was canceled.
Just a day before that contest, on Oct. 15, administrators from Waterford reached out to their counterparts at Badger and the Southern Lakes Conference to postpone the game.

Just a day before kickoff of the annual rivalry game between the Badger and Waterford football teams, the matchup has been called off.
The Friday night game between the Wolverines and Badgers was postponed this morning, according to Southern Lakes Conference commissioner Pat Miles, although no date for a make-up game has been provided yet.

WILLIAMS BAY — There was a festive energy at the Williams Bay football field on Oct. 9 as the community capped off a week of homecoming celebrations.
The scoreboard, however, was not quite so positive, as the Bulldogs’ eight-man football team lost to Belmont 56-12.

It was a tough start to the season for the Badger football team.
The team lost each of its first two games by six or fewer points. And in both contests, the Badgers came up just short of regaining the lead with minutes or seconds remaining.

After losing the season opener 52-14, the Williams Bay football team suffered another sizable defeat in Week 2, losing a 50-14 contest on the road against Saint Mary Catholic in Neenah.
However, the Bulldogs endured a much bigger loss than just the one on the scoreboard.

It is a classic cliché to say, “Football is a game of inches.” But sometimes, clichés hold true.
Badger’s football team came up on the wrong side of that saying Oct. 2, as they were stopped about a foot shy of the end zone on the final play of the game in a 27-21 home loss against Union Grove.

Eventually, all good things must come to an end.
The Badger football team learned that the hard way Sept. 25 when the program’s 13-game win streak against Westosha Central was snapped, as the Falcons came into Lake Geneva and pulled off a 41-39 upset in the season opener that was not decided until the game’s final minutes.

WILLIAMS BAY — Despite a tough loss for Williams Bay in the football season’s opening game, fans and players alike celebrated the opportunity to play, after concerns that coronavirus sports cancellations would stretch into the fall.
Losing the Sept. 25 game 52-12 to the Elkhart Lake Resorters in Williams Bay, the host Bulldogs suffered a rough start to the season. But head coach Jon Tomaszewski said he is still hopeful for a strong season.

The Badger football team has been a model of consistency, qualifying for the playoffs in each of the past 14 years. While the Badgers would love to make another postseason run this year, with all the uncertainty that the coronavirus has sewn, the goalposts have shifted a bit.
“This is not coach talk or whatever. Our goal is to play seven games. That’s it. Making it through the season is the only goal we have,” head coach Matt Hensler said.

The 2019 season marked the first time since 2015 that there was varsity football at Williams Bay High School. And the 1-9 record was the result of a young team learning some lessons the hard way about what it means to play varsity football.
Now that the team has a year of experience under its belt, the players feel that the bar will be set a little bit higher.
