Would it be Wisconsin without a Saturday tailgate? The 52 spellers competing in the 2026 Badger State Spelling Bee at Madison College’s Mitby Theater were invited to bring their families and join community supporters at a tailgate ahead of the 1 p.m. spelling bee.

Arnav Vempati said he uses the Word Club app as part of studying for the national spelling bee. It's made by the National Spelling Bee, and includes a list called the Words of the Champion.

Arnav Vempati, in his last year of eligibility for the national spelling bee, said it’s “a nice once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I really didn't think I was going to make it this far.”
