Items crafted from the shells of dead clams collected in Wisconsin rivers by Milwaukee artist Lillian Luft, including buttons and needles, are part of “Deliberate Acts,” an exhibit at the James Watrous Gallery in Madison.
Artist Lillian Luft positions a brooch fashioned from a clam shell that is part of “Deliberate Acts,” her exhibit at James Watrous Gallery in Madison. Luft is also a volunteer conservationist with the state Department of Natural Resources and over the last five years has taken part in clam and mussel surveys on Wisconsin rivers, where about half of the clam and mussel species in Wisconsin are in peril.
To make impressions of clams and mussels from throughout the country, Milwaukee artists used digital, 3D images from the Smithsonian Institution to create resin models that were then cast in lead.
Pieces of clam shells are combined with a photograph of the Fox River in Racine County where artist Lillian Luft took part in clam surveys with the state Department of Natural Resources. Luft collected the shells of dead clams to create the pieces for her exhibit at the James Watrous Gallery, located on the third floor of Overture Center.
