The shooting happened at the intersection of Williamson and Baldwin streets on the Near East Side, just blocks from where Tony Robinson was killed by police in 2015. Officials did not find wrongdoing in that 2015 shooting, but the city later settled a lawsuit with the family.
What led up to the shooting?
Madison Police said officers were called to the neighborhood about 1 p.m. Wednesday on a report of someone trying to enter parked vehicles. Police said officers found the suspect, but he drove away on a bicycle. Officers saw the man about 30 minutes later, and he either fell off or was pulled off his bike.
Madison Police do not wear body cameras, but police said there might be footage on a dash camera.
Bystander videos show three officers trying to subdue the man. A fourth officer runs up and yells "Taser Taser." Police say a Taser was deployed but did not work.
One of the officers fires his weapon three times, hitting the suspect, who later died.
Who is investigating the shooting?
The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating the shooting. Madison has an independent police monitor's office who could investigate on its own.
Were there protests?
Yes. On Wednesday night protesters marched to the Capitol and took the stage where Concerts on the Square was performing. The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra canceled the concert and said they stand with the Black community.
What happened to the officers?
The officers were placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in police shootings.
