Tony Abate, left, the senior conservation director at the Madison-based Groundswell Conservancy, talks with colleague JT Cestkowski while overlooking Westport Prairie. Wisconsin’s Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program has helped groups like Abate’s acquire and preserve land.
A massive prairie once stretched from northern Dane County into southern Columbia County. Only a few patches remain, including atop this drumlin in the town of Westport.
Though the protected area atop the drumlin predates Knowles-Nelson, the stewardship program helped Madison-based Groundswell Conservancy acquire land surrounding the narrow ridge. That land serves as a buffer and as a revitalized prairie.
