Wisconsin counties find additional uses for nursing homes instead of selling them

St. Croix County, where officials considered selling their nursing home, instead got a state grant to open a dementia crisis unit and voted to keep the facility.
Badger Prairie Health Care Center has a long history in Verona, dating back to 1854, when Dane County bought the surrounding land for a "poor farm," said Bill Brotzman, administrator of the nursing home. The current facility opened in 2011.

Badger Prairie Health Care Center in Verona is rated with four stars out of five by the federal government after receiving a citation-free annual inspection in August, which is unusual for the nursing home industry.
