TOWN OF VERMONT — There are sections of a stream in this western Dane County valley that are easily accessible to fish for brown trout, while other spots along the narrow 6-mile waterway are choked with brush, trees and invasive vegetation.
Jim Herrling, left, a member of Vermont Lutheran Church, consults with Reid Wilson, of EC3 Environmental Consulting, who is using a forestry mower to clear invasive species along a section of Vermont Creek south of Black Earth. The hope is to make the creek more accessible to anglers and is part of a greater effort by the church to restore 115 acres of prairie and woodland.
Leonard Schaub, left, and Peter Antonie of Vermont Lutheran Church, use a new boardwalk connecting hiking trails to Vermont Creek. The church has about 6 miles of hiking trails that are open to the public. Soon, the nearby section of the creek will be restored for trout fishing.
Vermont Lutheran Church was established in 1856, with the current church building constructed in 1913. The western Dane County church is surrounded by 115 acres of prairie and woodland.
Psalms are displayed along the nearly 6 miles of trails managed by Vermont Lutheran Church. The membership raised money beginning in 2018 and in 2022 purchased 115 acres of surrounding farm and woodland.
