This Louis XVI three-drawer desk from the 1740s is what helped convince Tarq Durante, owner of Cedarburg Auction & Appraisal in Brown Deer, to take on an auction of more than 200 items from the estate of Herman and Claudia Uihlein. Herman Uihlien was the son of Henry Uihlein, the longtime president of Schlitz Brewing Co.

Many of the items in the auction that begins Thursday are china and other ornamental pieces, including a Wedgewood dinner service in Florentine bone turquoise.
Debbie Jones of Whitewater and Karen Stade of Fort Atkinson made the drive to Brown Deer to check out items from the estate of Herman and Claudia Uihlein. The Uihleins traveled Europe in the early 1900s, collecting furnishings for their mansion being built in Whitefish Bay.
Among the items in the Uihlein collection is a blue and white Meissen-style oil lamp. The piece is in excellent condition, despite being in storage for more than 60 years.
