Madison police are asking for the public’s assistance as its Violent Crime Unit continues to investigate a weekend homicide that occurred inside an apartment on McKenna Boulevard on the city’s West Side.

Judge orders competency exam for Madison man accused of killing sister
A judge on Thursday ordered a competency evaluation for a Madison man accused of shooting his sister to death at her home on Christmas Eve.
State Assistant Public Defender Laura Breun asked for the examination for Joseph G. Green, 57, before a preliminary hearing was scheduled to occur before Dane County Circuit Judge Valerie Bailey-Rihn.
Green is charged with first-degree intentional homicide. Police said they believe Green shot his sister, Sheila M. Green, 63, multiple times Dec. 24 at her home on South Midvale Boulevard.

Trial ordered for Madison man in drug deal robbery that turned into homicide
A Madison man charged in the shooting death of an 18-year-old Dodgeville man last month was ordered to stand trial Thursday after a preliminary hearing.
Marcus T. Hamilton, 20, is charged with first-degree reckless homicide in the shooting death of Gunnar T.G. Holum on Dec. 14. The shooting happened in the 1000 block of Spruce Street on Madison’s Near West Side.
Hamilton is also charged with four counts of attempted armed robbery and four counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, along with felony bail jumping.

DOJ seeking information on past East High School business club trips in hidden camera investigation
The Wisconsin Department of Justice is looking to collect information on past trips of an East High School’s business club as part of the DOJ’s role in an investigation into hidden cameras found by students inside their Minneapolis hotel rooms earlier this month.
In a Dec. 16 email to some parents, interim East principal Brendan Kearney shared a message the district received from the DOJ regarding the law enforcement agency’s role in the investigation. The email had a subject line of: “Important Message to the Parents of East DECA Trip Alumni.”
Second man charged with homicide for 2018 Madison shooting death
A second man was charged Thursday with first-degree intentional homicide in the shooting death of a man whose body was found in August 2018 along a Southwest Side street.
The criminal complaint filed Thursday against Kendal J. Harris, 26, almost exactly mirrors a criminal complaint that was filed in April against Kem L. Davis, 26, of Fitchburg, which charged Davis with first-degree intentional homicide in the Aug. 25, 2018, death of DeAnthony Miggins, 23, of Madison. That complaint alleged DNA evidence found on a cigarette butt at the scene, along with a statement by someone who had been in jail with Davis, linked Davis to Miggins’ murder.

Man ordered to stand trial in 1994 cold case Madison homicide
A man charged with first-degree reckless homicide for the 1994 death of a woman in Madison was ordered to stand trial after a preliminary hearing Thursday, and after a judge denied a motion to dismiss the charge.
Willie L. Coleman, 52, of Marion, Indiana, was charged in November with the Nov. 4, 1994, death of Lula Cunnigan, 40, whose body was found in the 1600 block of Freeport Road on Madison’s Southwest Side.

Complaint: Ex-cop handcuffed girl during sexual assaults while with Madison Police Department
Police in Miami arrested a former Madison police officer Wednesday on charges he sexually assaulted a teenage girl from 2009 to 2012 while he was an officer in Madison.
A criminal complaint filed under seal on Dec. 12 but unsealed Thursday charges Morris A. Reid, 56, who retired from the Madison Police Department in 2013 rather than be fired, with two counts of sexual assault of a child under 16, three counts of child enticement, misconduct in office and making threats. All of the charges are felonies.

13-year-old boy crashes stolen car, leaves 2 injured passengers in burning vehicle, police say
A 13-year-old Verona boy crashed a stolen car in the East Towne Mall parking lot early Saturday morning and then fled, leaving two injured passengers in the car, which caught on fire, Madison police said.
The passengers, both teenagers from Middleton, were able to get out safely, and they were taken to a hospital, police spokesman Joel DeSpain said.
A short time later, the injured 13-year-old driver showed up at the same emergency room and tried to claim he had been injured while riding a bicycle, DeSpain said.

Woman arrested for OWI after crash into tree with 3 kids in car, no car seats, Madison police say
A woman who was babysitting was arrested for operating while intoxicated after crashing into a tree Sunday afternoon with three kids in her car, but no car seats, Madison police reported.
The crash happened shortly after 12:30 p.m. on North Sherman Avenue near Cherokee Circle, police spokeswoman Julie Laundrie said in a statement.
Officers found a Nissan Rogue had crashed into a tree and the Madison Fire Department was treating occupants ranging in age from 10 months to 43 years old. The driver, Sarah L. Johnson, was taken to University Hospital where she became unresponsive and was given Narcan, Laundrie said.

Massage therapist now facing 5 charges of touching clients in sexual manner, Madison police say
A massage therapist from Sun Prairie arrested in September for allegedly touching a client in a sexual manner now faces four more such charges after additional women came forward to report incidents following media coverage of the man’s arrest, Madison police reported.
Jarrod J. Huffman, 39, now faces five charges of fourth-degree sexual assault, police spokesman Joel Despain said in a statement.

3 Madison police officers cleared by DA in fatal shooting of man who shot at them
Three Madison police officers were cleared of any criminal liability in the Oct. 27 fatal shooting of a man who fired at them, Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne said Monday.
“In this incident the officers were faced with a subject who was armed with a handgun and who was not responding to commands while advancing upon them before firing in the officers’ direction,” Ozanne said in a statement. “Responding to that threat with deadly force is permitted under the law.”
Ozanne said in an interview, though, that it remains unknown to investigators why Dean G. Thomas, 63, fired at police.
