One of the last brick-and-mortar camera businesses in Wisconsin is closing one of its two stores in Madison, with the hope that it will make running the company easier and allow for a more robust inventory at a single store.
The Camera Company’s store near East Towne Mall will close on Feb. 21 and consolidate with the company’s Odana Road store on the city’s West Side. The company has had an East Side store for over 30 years.
Ward Lundgren, 67, was one of the co-founders of The Camera Company when it opened on Capitol Square in 1977 before closing in 2021. Lundgren said consolidating the company’s East Side store into the West Side store will allow for a deeper inventory and make operations more efficient.

Despite the ease of digital cameras, film remains popular, especially among younger photographers. The Camera Company’s darkroom will move from the East Side store to the West Side store later this month.
