Jayne Norton has owned Ehler’s General Store in Cornucopia since 2006. Established in 1915, the store is on the western edge of the Apostle Islands National Lake Shore and is about as far north as you can get in Wisconsin. Yvonne Margarelli and her husband have owned the North Coast Inn in Washburn, for 17 years. The couple struggle to keep up with demand while also facing a shortage of employees to clean rooms, which has resulted in mandatory two or three day stays during the summer season.

A boat ride is the only option for an intimate view of the sea caves at Devils Island, one of 22 islands in Lake Superior that make up the Apostle Islands. There is a proposal to designate the islands a national park, but local leaders worry that will bring more tourists than they can handle.
