BELLEVILLE — To accommodate the hundreds of new residents who have moved to this southern Dane County community in recent years, developers have erected scores of nearly identical neutral-colored houses along the edges of the village.

The accumulation of similar-looking properties in the rapidly growing village is prompting village leaders to consider an “anti-monotony” ordinance that would require homes on the same block or cul-de-sac to look different from one another.
Under a proposed anti-monotony ordinance in Belleville, homes would need to have at least two differentiating features from others on the same block to receive zoning approval. Those features could include different color siding or exterior accents, the heights of roofs or the placement of windows and garages.
