Wisconsin football fans see program turning after winning back Axe from Minnesota

  • AFerguson
  • Nov 25, 2023
  • Nov 25, 2023 Updated Feb 27, 2024

Badgers fans loved seeing their team reclaim Paul Bunyan's Axe as the program turns from its low point a few weeks ago.

Victory for Fickell and Co.

Congratulations to the Wisconsin Badgers on bringing home the Axe! Tanner Mordecai had a great game with the help of a physical offensive line, and Braelon Allen finished with 26 carries for 165 yards and two TD’s in possibly his last game.

— Jeff Ostach☮️ (@jeff_ostach) November 26, 2023

A glorious day

1. Beat Goldie? CHECK.
2. Claw back Axe? CHECK.
3. Bounce Minnie from bowl eligibility? CHECK.
4. Rupture Boat Hull? CHECK.
5. Do it all at THEIR stadium? CHECK.
ON WISCONSIN.

— chris van wagner (@CVWhoops) November 26, 2023

All hail the Dairy Raid

The Badgers played their most complete game of the year. Offensive Coordinator Phil Longo leaned heavily on the run game and played Old School Wisconsin football. The team brings Paul Bunyan's Axe back home AND they knock the Gophers out a post-season bowl!

— wisconsinsane (@wisconsinsane) November 25, 2023

Winning season clinched

Beating Minnesota is always great no matter how the season has gone.

— Badger Steve 🧀🍺🦌 (@UW_Steve) November 25, 2023

Gratifying, some may say

1) The Axe is coming back to Madison.
2) Denied the Gophers a bowl game.

A very satisfying win.

— Madtown Alum (@madtownalum) November 26, 2023

Line of scrimmage controlled

It wasn’t perfect or even among the top level of expectations for a Badger team, but it was the best the O-line has played all season

— MountainBadger (@mtnbdgr) November 25, 2023

Beginning of a long streak?

A fun win. Once again they deferred the opening kickoff and spotted the opponent 7 points. Sheesh. Great adjustments followed but Gophers are not good. PJ’s team in decline. Fickell’s gonna keep that axe for a long time!

— Fred Melius MD (@fmelius) November 26, 2023

Best wishes for Braelon

Braelon Allen the past 2 weeks has been the difference. Hope he gets drafted to a good spot in the NFL and two trophy wins is a great way to end the season. #OnWisconsin

— Jeremy Wojtecki (@jwojPAC) November 25, 2023

Trending upward

Good for morale. Good for recruiting. Boosters will love a win vs Minnesota. Long way to go though for the program overall. Rough year. Badgers aren’t in the same universe of Michigan or Ohio State. Being competitive with Ohio State has to be the goal when they hired Luke Fickell

— Caleb Champeau (@CalebShampoo) November 26, 2023

Positive turnaround

It’s a good end to a bit of a rocky season. I think that the last couple weeks were a bit of a gut check and they responded. Next year will be interesting to see what this staff does with a whole offseason and cycle

— EP In Katy (@EP2KP2) November 26, 2023

Fickell gets his flowers

LF saved this team from a burning dumpster fire. While it wasn’t the season we wanted, he did a hell of a coaching job the last two weeks.

— Go Pack Go (@jeffgtown) November 26, 2023

Revenge and redemption

Happy for the guys who were there when Badgers first lost the axe after so many years. A little redemption is nice

— BESmith63 (@BeSmith63) November 26, 2023

Not done yet

I was impressed with the patience Longo showed to stay with the run. Allen isn’t 100% but in back to back games showed grit…same with Mordecai. OL played mistake free FB and defense had some key turnovers…great way to end a tough first season.

— Todd (@pilprin) November 26, 2023

Like a plate of leftover turkey

Satisfying, Jim...very, very satisfying...

— Rick Foy (@RickFoy) November 26, 2023

Indeed it does

Being 7-5 heading into a bowl feels better than being 6-6 heading into a bowl

— John Kane (@Tortured_Verse) November 26, 2023

Key to winning

When big men can play as big men, good things happen.

— Más Tequila (@JoRy_MaMa) November 25, 2023

Do as you please

Can I blame the NW and Indiana losses on injuries and say it was otherwise a decent but not great season?

— Well, Actually ℹ️ (@ajhenslo) November 26, 2023

Big wins for the program

A great way to finish the season. Fickell got back what PC lost and in the process showed us a glimpse of what the future might hold for Badger fans. #OnWisconsin

— Mark (@DUD6887) November 26, 2023

A great point

Can’t help but wonder what happens with the season if Mordecai doesn’t get hurt, but love that the axe is back where it belongs

— Dan D. (@One_Punch_Dan) November 26, 2023

RTB

Sweet to have the axe back in Madison! Better yet to beat Fleck!

— Gary Brilowski (@gbrilo) November 25, 2023

Big letdown in a macro outlook

Nice finish to the season. The defense causing two big turnovers to clinch it in the fourth quarter. Disappointing that they couldn’t take advantage of the worst Big Ten West division in history this year though

— Kirk Eastenson (@Eastyfor3) November 26, 2023

Indeed he was

Mordecai is very good, tough, and poised. Wish we had him longer. Def front was great.

— Nick Weisheipl (@CoachWeisheipl) November 26, 2023

Leadership key for culture

What a change from the Northwestern game to now and Tanner is a big reason why! He brought the confidence the Badgers needed. Kudos to our coaching staff too for incorporating the run more!

— Mary Korn Erickson (@sixtiesfan) November 26, 2023

Ha, I see what you did there

If he can find an unfrozen lake

Fleck has plenty of time to row his boat this winter.

— Brad Affeldt (@BA_14) November 25, 2023

Plunge

Always great to sink the boat!

— Dr. Horror (@popculturepsych) November 26, 2023

Positive trends for Badgers fans

The Axe is back home. PJ's season is over. Badgers get a month of extra practice. Badgers trending in the right direction. 📈
