The Brandon Public Library will expand this year with a one-story addition into the alleyway at right. The building, on the state and national registers of historic places, was constructed in 1894 for cold storage and a harness shop. The library moved in 19 years later.
It doesn't take long for Christy Ross, director of the Brandon Public Library, to give a tour of the 1,334-square-foot facility established in 1913. The library, however, is about to undergo a $650,000 expansion paid for entirely through private fundraising.

Harold and Grace Kurtz have donated nearly a third of the funding for the library expansion in Brandon. Harold, an author who has written 10 books, spent part of his childhood in the Fond du Lac County community, which provided stories for many of his writings.

While the space at the Brandon Public Library has remained unchanged during the past 109 years, the library's programming and offerings have evolved, including a drone that can be checked out much like a book.
