The Rock River solar farm next to Alliant Energy's Riverside natural gas plant in Beloit provides energy for the utility's customers. Another new natural gas plant next to Riverside is scheduled to come online next year. Pictured are Tim Robertson, former operations manager for the Riverside operations, left, and Paul Gregor, plant manager.

Alliant Energy Corp. says it will build the 69-turbine English Farms Wind Farm in central Iowa. Alliant's Franklin County wind farm, also in Iowa, is shown above.
LA FARGE — When building his house in rural Vernon County, Rob Danielson put it close to the road to limit the carbon footprint of plowing a long driveway.
Thirty-two solar panels provide electricity for Rob Danielson’s home near the village of La Farge. Danielson and his wife, Terese Agnew, time their activities to minimize their carbon footprint but oppose large-scale investments in renewable energy by for-profit utilities, arguing that individuals can do more to lower carbon emissions.

The walls of Rob Danielson’s and Terese Agnew’s home are about two feet thick and include an air gap and foam insulation that contribute greatly to energy efficiency.
Wind turbines dot farm fields in western Iowa County, where developer Invenergy wants to install a 300-megawatt solar farm. The 20-turbine Montfort Wind Energy Center, built in 2001, can generate up to 30 megawatts of electricity.
Madison Gas & Electric has won state Public Service Commission approval to build a wind farm in northeastern Iowa, about 200 miles west of Madison. The 33 turbines will be nearly 500 feet tall, about 100 feet higher than those in MGE's Top of Iowa wind farm in north-central Iowa, above.
