ABOVE: Seen near its western trailhead near North Road in the unincorporated Walworth County hamlet of Allens Grove, the 5.8-mile rails-to-trails Pelishek-Tiffany Nature Trail traverses former Milwaukee Road railroad right-of-way between Allens Grove and Clinton in Rock County. The 64.3-acre linear park, purchased by Rock County Parks in 1995, accommodates a variety of users year-round, including winter snowmobilers and cross-country skiers and warm-weather hikers, bikers, horseback riders, joggers and bird-watchers.

Evers, DOA announce highest state surplus and ‘rainy day’ fund balance in state history

Gov. Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Administration (DOA) on Oct. 16 announced the state of Wisconsin ended Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 with a positive balance of $7.07 billion — eclipsing last year’s record-breaking $4.3 billion balance. In addition, the state maintained its ‘rainy day’ fund (Budget Stabilization Fund) at a record-high $1.8 billion, according to the new Annual Fiscal Report released by DOA.

Wisconsin's 2023 bear season harvest was well below the recent annual average of approximately 4,000 harvested bears, representing the lowest yearly bear harvest since 2008. Wisconsin bear hunters harvested 2,922 bears during the 2023 black bear season, a marked decrease from the 4,009 bears taken by hunters last year. This decline was observed across the state, as the bear harvest fell short of respective targets in all management zones.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources presented the deer harvest quotas and framework for the 2024 Wisconsin deer hunting season to the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board on June 26. The statewide antlerless quota for the 2024 season is 272,837 deer, with 245,245 total bonus antlerless harvest authorizations available for purchase across the state. These authorizations are in addition to the free antlerless harvest authorizations issued in farmland zones, which are not reflected in this total.
