As reported by WisPolitics.com, the Senate Committee on Mental Health, Substance Abuse Prevention, Children and Families heard testimony on Senate Bills 597 and 598 which would require school and public libraries to notify parents every time their kids under 16 check something out. Wisconsin Educational Media & Technology Association Legislative Chair and Muskego High School Librarian Emily Dittmar told the committee that SB 597 would require school librarians to take time away from interacting with kids in order to implement the measure's requirements - referring to the 24 hour notification requirement within the bill. Dittmar also argued the bill would be an unnecessary economic burden. Assembly author Rep. Barb Dittrich (R-Oconomowoc) countered the bill is meant to increase parental engagement and help calm some parents' nerves. She said parents during the COVID-19 pandemic began raising concerns about what their kids are reading. Dittrich told her colleagues she will not be proposing any book bans following this legislation.
