Record rainfall over the weekend has led to major flash flooding across the Milwaukee area, leaving tens of thousands without power. The downpour began on August 9, when around 12 inches of rain fell in parts of the metro areas, leaving drainage systems overflowing and submerging streets and cars. Over 10 million people across the Midwest are under flood alerts as the rainfall continues in parts of Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri. Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers ordered National Guard vehicles and operators to support Milwaukee County’s response to severe floods. “I continue to urge folks to use caution when traveling in areas affected by last night’s floods. Please take care and pay close attention to weather updates in your area,” Evers said on social media. No flood-related deaths have yet been reported within the city; however, many residents have reported major property damage. A flood warning was also issued by the National Weather Service for August 11, with more rain forecasted as well as lingering effects of existing flooding. The Milwaukee River crested at a record 11.19 feet, exceeding the previous record of 10.28 feet set in July 2010. The flooding has also resulted in the cancellation of the final day of the Wisconsin State Fair.
“I’m urging President Trump to do the right thing and make the appropriate presidential disaster declaration … and quickly and without delay,” Evers wrote.
