Fans disheartened by Wisconsin men's basketball, football efforts

  • AFerguson
  • Nov 14, 2023
  • Nov 14, 2023

It's tough being a Wisconsin sports fan and the Badgers' men's basketball team didn't help matters Tuesday by being blown out at Providence.

A house was built

AJ Storr was the only scoring bright light for a Badgers team that were beaten wire-to-wire by a more athletic Providence team with 7 new players while Wisconsin returned all 5 starters. For the Badgers shooting 3’s, it was brick city, per usual.

— Jeff Ostach☮️ (@jeff_ostach) November 15, 2023

Point galore!

I'm not sure which squad has a more disappointing defense: football or men's basketball.

— Craig Smith (@smithcp1) November 15, 2023

Same system

The more things change the more they stay the same. Only watched part of the first half. I didn’t recognize the new players but it looked just like last year. Bad defense, can’t shoot, Wahl especially just throwing the ball towards the hoop. SMH.

— Doug Clemann (@DougClemann) November 15, 2023

Reward aggression

Just like every player under Gard, Wahl has regressed. After 5 years, there is no reason he has not improved any part of his game. Lowering his shoulder and throwing up a circus shot is exhausting to watch. Storr and Blackwell need to play more, only aggressive ones

— Shawn Brooks (@ShawnBrabbit) November 15, 2023

Outmatched

Does UW not have a weight room? How's Crowl 7' 170# still? Bigs do not get better under Gard at all.

— Patman40 (@Patman402) November 15, 2023

The defense either

I don’t know if this offense can survive in the Big Ten, wait, I’m so confused, like I’ve seen this movie before

— numbWIsportsfan (@RIPReggieK) November 15, 2023

Lows and a high

Ugly. Not competitive. Poor shooting again. 4 pts. from Crowl?? 6 points from Wahl?? Chucky 2/10? TERRIBLE play from our returners. On the very bright side, looks like we may have a big time player in Storr. Fast as heck, aggressive, not afraid to shoot. WOW.

— PackFanatic (@PackFanatic1) November 15, 2023

Results miss the hype

We were told offense was supposed to be much improved and I see the same things as last year; predictable ball movement and looking lost/confused when the ball can’t get into the low post.

— Chad Hoof (@FAPuffChady) November 15, 2023

Positive surprises

We were 12 of 12 from the free throw line! John Blackwell was a pleasant surprise

— Jo Howard (@Johoward519) November 15, 2023

Blackwell seems good

Is there anything about this team to be excited about after that? First time I saw them and they didn’t do anything well. Looked like last year with a worse defense.

— Chris Davis (@cdavis20000) November 15, 2023

Mirrored programs?

Greg Gard is the Paul Chryst of Big Ten basketball. His first two years, he had Bo Ryan's players. Fast forward to year eight, and Gard has his basketball program looking like a horrible Paul Chryst football team.

— Lance P (@LancePiep) November 15, 2023

Tough week for Badgers fans

Unacceptable effort. What’s in the water on Monroe St these days?

— Rob Bauer (@chappy1634) November 15, 2023

Friars a model

Providence shows a great example of what the Badgers have missed since the final 4 teams, players drive the ball and create fouls, pretty easy recipe to win. Throwing up 3s and that's it, will not win. This team will be lucky to have Gard finish the season as coach

— Shawn Brooks (@ShawnBrabbit) November 15, 2023

We sleep in May?

One of the worst performances I can remember from UW basketball. It’s really early in the season to have that kind of disinterested effort. Could be a long year…and Gard’s last.

— Team Slinky (@Buckmaster_FP) November 15, 2023

Predictable though

Oh my gosh, @JimPolzinWSJ. THREE games in and the “Fire Gard” chant has already started. Are you kidding me?

— TamiraMadsen (@tamiramadsen) November 15, 2023

Too optimistic?

Pretty easy to assess this group already. They have one, maybe two good shooters on the entire roster. No real perimeter mismatches for other teams to defend either. Bigs are still soft. 15-17 wins. Bubble team at best.

— Jack Pine Express (@kwzanella) November 15, 2023

Who cares if its Tuesday?

pic.twitter.com/cCBbTHgXD5

— Erik Haslam (@haslametrics) November 15, 2023

Sigh

This fall is reminding me of my years as a student in Madison when Don Morton and Steve Yoder were the Badgers marquee coaches.

— Aben_glibb (@GlibbAben) November 15, 2023

Pacing and spacing

What is the explanation for how every kid who puts on a Wisconsin jersey immediately becomes incapable of putting the ball through the hoop? I’ve never seen anything like our stunning inability to score, year in and year out.

— Russ Evansen (@waunaruss) November 15, 2023

Spacing doesn't help

Badgers are not as bad as they looked. I’m nervous that the ability of teams getting to the basket is gonna be a continuous problem.

— CT Grant (@Ctg2223) November 15, 2023

These are the tough questions

Starters only put up 40 points! That's abysmal at best. How can this happen when nearly your entire roster is back?

— 5YMarketing_Chris (@5ymarketing) November 15, 2023

Pack the paint

It’s very easy for an opposing coach to scheme against UW. Our bigs are soft at the rim and can’t shoot from outside. You just sink your forwards, let them shoot from anywhere they want and if they get the ball low, go straight up. The fadeaway baby hook is a terrible shot.

— Ben Jones (@UpNorthBadgers) November 15, 2023

Bingo!

These cold starts are just a continuation of last year! All a team has to do to defend us is form a circle just outside the post and listen to the clanks! The two most experienced players were abysmal. How many bunnies have they missed in 4 years??? This is not fun.

— Mary Korn Erickson (@sixtiesfan) November 15, 2023

It'll be a long year

"Fire Greg Gard" crew gaining members, fast. Hard to see the same scoring drought as last year. Even tougher pill to swallow is the awful defense and FT shooting. Which are also the same problems from last year.

— J.B. (@TheAntiHeroLife) November 15, 2023

It's a chore

Wash, rinse, repeat.

— UWOX95 (@wpscmsn) November 15, 2023

Providence? Yes!

Providence has a new coach, 7 new players and predicted to finish in the middle of the Big East. Did they ever look like the better team tonight.

— ksagendo (@ksagendo) November 15, 2023

Very weird

Feels so strange that they held their own against Tennessee but were completey outmatched in this game

— Elliott B (@SconnieFanBoy93) November 15, 2023

An honest assumption

I like the challenging schedule to start the season. Unfortunately, they'll probably start about 3-6 as a result. It's only get uglier before things start to improve.

— Madtown Alum (@madtownalum) November 15, 2023

Good suggestions

+ 💯 from FT line and Blackwell. Beat by more athletic, better shooting/defensive team. Don’t need to see Lindsey and Gilmore. Bring Wahl off bench?

— tyler (@BattleBlack2027) November 15, 2023

They're crazy good

Marquette about to score more in the 1st half against IL than Badgers did in whole game against Prov

— Dave Rau (@DavidRau101) November 15, 2023

That would be ... something

Kirk Penny time. Fastest rising assistant coach in history. 3 games :)

— ChazB (@chazb33) November 15, 2023

Woof

— Chris Cesar (@Cesar_Chris) November 15, 2023

Nightmares incoming

pic.twitter.com/SRNEJbCRXi

— Todd (@pilprin) November 15, 2023

Appears so

Team has the same issue as the football program. Soft players/leaders who lost the culture and have no idea the identity of the Wisconsin way

— UDubAlum08 (@bdgr4lyf) November 15, 2023

Who would have thought?

The offense looks worse than last year.

— Brad Affeldt (@BA_14) November 15, 2023

Winner!

It’s ok the football team would lose by 2 TDs at Providence as well.

— FreshPrinceMKE (@twistedshwzter) November 15, 2023

Hope you enjoy the weather

Heading to Ft Myers next week. Hope the team shows up.

— FLAPirateguy (@FPirateguy) November 15, 2023

No hopeful signs tonight

No way this team makes the Tourney at this rate.

— Tyler Ten Pass (@Cheesehead0392) November 15, 2023

Women's basketball tonight?

When will Wisconsin sports stop the bleeding?

— John G (@John_G_16) November 15, 2023

They are winners

Realizing WI is now a hockey and volleyball school.
