Fans question Wisconsin men's basketball's strategy in loss at Michigan

We took the pulse of Badgers fans on Twitter after the University of Wisconsin men's basketball team fell at Michigan 87-79 in overtime on Sunday. Here's what they're saying.

Moral of the story

Moral victories are usually hollow & meaningless this time of year. Given where this game was headed, what the Badgers overcame and how it ended? Losing the kind of game that defines the final weeks of a college basketball season might yield more dividends than had they won it.

— Rob Hernandez (@RobHernandezGLF) February 26, 2023

Strategy vs. execution

He does, though not frequently. I think if you look closely, McGee was trying to foul just before the pass was released to Bufkin in the corner. I don't think Davis should have gone for a steal, no. He took himself out of the play.

— Jim Polzin (@JimPolzinWSJ) February 26, 2023

Window's closing fast

A gritty Badgers team performance ends up in a gut-wrenching overtime loss. Both Max Klesmit and Conner Essegian had career highs for Wisconsin with 19 & 24 respectively. Badgers will have to beat Purdue & Minnesota hoping for a 1st four game in Dayton, Ohio.

— Jeff Ostach☮️ (@jeff_ostach) February 26, 2023

Some sting a bit more

Thank God for Essegian and Klesmit. Should have fouled on the last play in regulation to stop the three. Unnecessary loss. Hate losing to Howard. #OnWisconsin

— BethAnn Meier (@BAMeier) February 26, 2023

Fair enough

You have to foul!

— Kelly Vieth (@kdvieth23) February 26, 2023

Facing a bigger loss

Sure hope Chucky is healthy. McGee played incredible in his absence. Klesmit and Essegian and McGee all stepped up in Chuckie’s absence.

— Chris Davis (@cdavis20000) February 26, 2023

Sticking to his style

Greg Gard lost that game

— Scott Herbst (@herbst20) February 26, 2023

What could've been

Unfortunate that they did not foul...especially when Davis misses the steal...They played really well, but that final sequence of regulation really hurt.

— Todd (@pilprin) February 26, 2023

It all adds up

Would be in the tournament if they fouled up 3 this year. Today vs MICH, NOV vs Kansas. Gard gonna Gard.

— Taylor (@taylorwmj) February 26, 2023

Just keep grinding

They were doing so well but…….., a very lucky shot (Badgers have had them as well). Got to make every possession count n OT. Badgers did not do that. Liked their effort and FT shooting !! Next game up. Go Badgers.🏀

— Paul Yochum'63 (@PaulYochum63) February 26, 2023

Finding good in the bad

Fun but heartbreaking game. Strange season - I've been more encouraged by Bucky's play in losses to Kansas and Michigan than any win (possible exception of Marquette game). Crowl played more ruggedly than any other game I remember; good to see.

— Brian S (@BrianSm71994635) February 26, 2023

You hate to hear it

Frustrating because I just can't stand Michigan and the whinning....I feel like the bad guys won. 😒 Anyway, Connor snd Max did great. So proud of Mcghee! But oh nooo about Chuckie.

— Kristi Conway-Powers (@NoodlesP29) February 26, 2023

Nailing it shut

It was over when Dickinson made the 3 for OT. They should have fouled at :05 left. Major mistake

— Fred Ehle (@FredEhle) February 26, 2023

Same old story

You don’t foul up 3 with 1.8 you 100% deserve to lose. Just another classic example of this team finding a way to lose rather than making winning plays. Felt just like the Kansas game.

— Andrew Zimdars (@andrew_zimdars) February 26, 2023

Say it again now

Foul. Foul. Foul

— Mark Massey (@mfmass) February 26, 2023

Learning the hard way

Broken hearted. They worked so hard.

— Louise Robbins (@lsrobbins) February 26, 2023

Help wanted

We need an athletic BIG. Big time!

— Travis Thompson (@PhoenixSTLRams) February 26, 2023

Escaping their grasp

Kamari gave great minutes. Needed to make things harder for Dickinson. His vision was too clear on touches. Our execution rate out of timeouts is not good. Needed to foul with 2.1 to go. We let another one slip away. #OnWisconsin

— Scott Fillner (@sfillner) February 26, 2023

Couldn't hurt to try

Dang…just foul…don’t go for steal…don’t really even need to put guy on inbound passer…match up and double team best shooter…

— aarondentz (@aarondentz) February 26, 2023

Guarding against failure

Game was lost by Greg Gard. Feel for the kids going to miss NCAA because Gard refuses to foul up 3.

— Salvador Allende (@1973salvador) February 26, 2023

Time to bounce back

Shades of Ben Brust only it was Michigan this time. The Badgers played their hearts out! I hope they can rebound against Purdue.

— Mary Korn Erickson (@sixtiesfan) February 26, 2023

It starts at the top

Lost a game they could have won. Even I was screaming for a foul up 3. Despite some mediocre play, they should have won. It’s on Gard.

— Doug Clemann (@DougClemann) February 26, 2023

State your case

I don’t understand Gard’s refusal to have them foul up 3. The point guard should have been fouled bring the ball up the court.

— Scott Sommerfeld (@kmbdad) February 26, 2023

Of course it did

Did it have to be Dickenson?

— Brett Schaal (@StillVertical84) February 26, 2023

Gone in an instant

Very depressing. We had it that’s what hurts.
