Euro 2024 Round of 16 picks: Best bets for Netherlands vs. Romania, Austria vs. Turkey
The Netherlands narrowly advanced to the Round of 16 as the third-place finisher in their group but somehow drew a favorable matchup against Romania, winners of Group E. Meanwhile Austria and Turkey will duke it out in a battle between two popular upset picks at the tournament.
Romania is one of the stories of the Euros, alongside Georgia, as they managed to beat Belgium, Ukraine and Slovakia to the Group E title. They responded to an early goal to draw their last time out and successfully played the role of underdog thus far.
The Dutch squad has struggled to get the most out of its talent on the big stage for years now. They lost a great 3-2 battle against Austria in their last match but already drew with France and are willing to put lots of bodies in the final third and trust Virgil van Dijk to lead their back line.
The Netherlands’ willingness to take chances combined with Romania’s resolve sets this up to be one of the higher-scoring matches of the Round of 16, hence the over being an attractive option.
The Round of 16 closes out with what could be the most exciting match of them all. Ralf Rangnick rolls out an Austrian team that will hunt to win the ball back and plays with extreme aggression and physicality, which will help them subdue an unprepared opponent.
Turkey took a beating against Portugal but beat Georgia and the Czech Republic to finish the Group Stage with six points. Like Austria, they aren’t afraid to muddy up the game with their physicality but can draw moments of brilliance from Hakan Calhanoglu and Arda Guler near the penalty box.
These teams are too resilient and evenly matched to separate them. Regardless of which team scores first, we trust the other to battle back and send this match to extra time, if not penalties.
