Joel Marcus thought he would close Nina's in the late 1970s and return to law school after the death of his father. Instead, Marcus spent another 45 years running the business and was joined in 1999 by his new wife, Judy Swartz Marcus.

The building that houses Nina’s Department & Variety Store in Spring Green was constructed in 1911 by B.L. and I.W. Cohen, who had come to Spring Green in 1905 to open a general store. The brothers had a disagreement and in 1916 sold the business and the building to Harris Marcus, who opened a department store.
