Wisconsin Historical Museum

  • Sep 28, 2025

The $120 million redevelopment will more than double the exhibit space of the facility it's replacing.

'A pivotal moment': Design team tapped for new $120 million Wisconsin history museum

An architecture firm that has worked on some of the country’s top museums has been tapped to join the design team for a new Wisconsin history center, the Wisconsin Historical Society said.

Cheeses and judges from across the world returned to Monona Terrace for the biennial World Championship Cheese Contest on Tuesday, with nearly 3,000 entires in an event that was closed to the public due to the pandemic.

The SmithGroup will join the effort to replace the existing, undersized Wisconsin Historical Museum at 30 N. Carroll St. on Capitol Square with a four-story, 100,000-square-foot museum that has a construction date slated for early 2024, said Kendall Poltzer, a spokesperson for the historical society.

Historical Society's glassy new museum would open a window to Capitol Square

With a prominent site at the top of State Street, the Wisconsin Historical Society’s early concepts for a new $120 million museum envision a stylish four-story structure with a glass facade and rooftop deck offering sweeping views of the Capitol.

What’s coming inside the 100,000-square-foot structure may be even more impressive, more than doubling the exhibition space of the existing museum at 30 N. Carroll St. that will be razed for the project, delivering state-of-the-art technology for greater access to the society’s vast collection when it opens in 2026.
