The news of his shooting — captured on video in grisly detail — sent shockwaves through classrooms everywhere.
Pleas for civility in U.S. political discourse but those calls were not always heeded, and some people who criticized Kirk were fired.
Still, he said suspect Tyler Robinson, 22, disliked the conservative influencer and "There was clearly a leftist ideology."
From the moment conservative activist Charlie Kirk was felled by an assassin, partisans began fighting over which side was to blame.
Numerous workers were fired for their comments, and conservatives targeted social media users they viewed as offensive or celebratory.
The aftermath of Kirk's killing is increasingly a test of public tolerance over political differences in a nation splintered by politics.
Trump's Republican administration is considering classifying some groups as domestic terrorists and revoking tax-exempt status for certain nonprofits.
