The leader of an animal rights movement to shut down a beagle breeding and research facility in Blue Mounds was still in jail Sunday.

Protesters were met with a barricade of hay bales, a manure-filled trench, a barbed-wire fence, tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets.

Originally from Madison, Roger Hoffman, who became a citizen of Saint Kitts and Nevisto in 2009 and renounced his U.S. citizenship, was also fined $150,000.

Officers were sent to a residence in the 4000 block of 28th Avenue about 4:13 p.m. April 7 after a report that a 4-year-old had been shot in the leg.
Makoto Kuroda also admitted to another colleague in an email that he’d tried to poison the victim, according to the criminal complaint.
After the suspect shot himself, he was carried out of a marsh to a waiting ambulance and life-saving measures were performed, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash happened about 4:10 p.m. in the 4300 block of Rutland-Dunn Town Line Road, east of the village of Oregon, the Dane County Sheriff's Office reported.
Following an investigation and a confession, a lab employee was arrested.
A 6-year-old girl was found deceased in her bedroom in 2022, and investigators said they observed no foul play. Four years later, a renewed investigation points to a homicide.
Ridglan Farms and the Dane County Sheriff’s office have declined to say how they intend to handle activists planning to take beagles from Ridglan’s town of Blue Mounds facility April 19.
The crash remains under investigation by the Janesville Police Department and the Rock County Medical Examiner’s Department.
He pleaded guilty to homicide by intoxicated use of vehicle in February 2026.
Jury found him not guilty of attempted first-degree intentional homicide.
