  • Mar 6, 2025 Updated Oct 16, 2025

On March 6, 2015, Madison police officer Matt Kenny, who is white, shot and killed 19-year-old Tony Robinson, a black man, after an altercation at a home on Williamson Street. Robinson's death sparked weeks of demonstrations. Kenny was cleared of any wrongdoing by Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne in May 2015, reigniting protests in the city. Robinson's name was invoked again recently in another round of protests by local activists condemning the death of a black Minneapolis man, George Floyd, at the hands of white police officers.
