The state Capitol, the scene of a spontaneous celebration in November when Joe Biden was elected president, was mostly empty Wednesday as people watched the transition of power from home or work.
Democrat Joe Biden was sworn in as president of the United States on Wednesday, vowing to end the 'uncivil war' in a deeply divided country reeling from a battered economy and a raging coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 400,000 Americans.
Inaugural poet Amanda Gorman leaves big impression: 'Even as we grieved, we grew.'
NEW YORK (AP) — In one of the inauguration's most talked-about moments, poet Amanda Gorman summoned images dire and triumphant Wednesday as she called out to the world “even as we grieved, we grew.”

World welcomes new US president, hopes for renewed cooperation
Joe Biden has been sworn in as the 46th President of the United States and leaders around the world have reacted to the historic event.
MEXICO CITY — Leaders across the globe welcomed the arrival of U.S. President Joe Biden and the end of the often confrontational presidency of Donald Trump, noting the world's most pressing problems, including the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, require multilateral cooperation, an approach Trump ridiculed.
Many expressed hope Wednesday that Biden would right the world's largest democracy two weeks after they watched rioters storm the Capitol, shaking the faith of those fighting for democracy in their own countries.
