What is now St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, 826 State St., is pictured here in this undated photo. At the time this photo was taken, the building was still known as First Congregational Church. This photo was taken sometime in the early 1910s; in 1912, the steeple was struck twice by lightning and never rebuilt.

St. George and the Dragon

St. George is a favorite of Serbians, pictured here inside Saint George Serbian Orthodox Church, 826 State St. He is often shown slaying a dragon or standing over a dragon he slayed. The story goes that George, who died in 303 A.D., slayed a dragon bested a dragon that demanded human sacrifices and was about to consume a princess before the saint saved the day.
