BACK TO SCHOOL
A veteran former educator and longtime Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction State School Superintendent, Gov. Tony Evers (center) found himself back in school Monday, May 1 as he made an hour-long visit to the 1,800-student Delavan-Darien School District at Grades 5-8 Phoenix Middle School in Delavan. As part of his visit, Evers, seen here with sixth-grader Khloe Kaiser (left) and ninth-grader Emily Nova-Ortiz (right), met with student volunteers comprising the district’s HOPE Squad peer-to-peer suicide prevention program, which encompasses 68 specially-trained elementary, middle and high school students. Evers made the stop as part of a statewide tour during the May observance of Mental Health Awareness Month, visiting students and schools and meeting with children’s mental health professionals and advocates to highlight mental and behavioral health and well-being initiatives in his proposed biennial 2023-2025 state budget, including a proposed $270 million in permanent, ongoing funding for the “Get Kids Ahead” initiative, created by Evers last year to expand school-based mental health services.
