The spongy moth, formerly known as the gypsy moth and seen in its caterpillar form, is an established invasive insect that defoliates more than 300 species of trees and shrubs including oaks, birch, lindens, crabapple, aspen, willow. It has again been discovered in southeast Wisconsin.
The female adult moth lays eggs in masses in August, with each egg mass containing 500 to 1,000 eggs. Egg masses can survive winter easily in Wisconsin, as they can tolerate temperature as low as -20 F.
Late fall and winter are a good opportunity to take on the recent area outbreak of the spongy moth.
