Lee County in Florida, which was recently devastated by Hurricane Ian, has seen an increase in cases of vibrio vulnificus. Vibrio vulnificus is commonly known as flesh-eating bacteria. The county has recorded 29 cases of the illness and four deaths. Almost all of these cases were diagnosed after the hurricane. Vibrio vulnificus infections are typically caused when bacteria enters the body through an open cut. The infection can develop into necrotizing fasciitis, which is a condition that causes tissue to break down. According to state health data, there have been 11 deaths linked to Vibrio vulnificus this year in Florida and 65 cases in total. The bacteria live in warm brackish water such as standing flood waters. The Florida Department of Health has urged locals to “take precautions against infection and illness caused by Vibrio vulnificus". The department also noted that sewage spills caused by the hurricane may increase bacteria levels.
