Fans blame officiating in Wisconsin men's basketball's upset loss at Penn State
The Badgers lost by four and only led for 17 seconds on Tuesday. Fans dished plenty of blame as No. 11 Wisconsin suffered its first Big Ten loss.
VCU-esque
Penn State deserved this win, causing havoc on defense the entire game. Wisconsin couldn’t match the Nittany Lions intensity in front of a small crowd. The Badgers had too many turnovers & Penn State’s guard play was better. They outplayed Wisconsin, now 5-1 in the Big Ten.

Turnovers were troublesome
The recent spike in turnovers is troubling the last two games
— chuckwestover (@chuckwestover) January 17, 2024
We did not get a single big stop the last 5 minutes. The help defense was often just not there.
Max’s foul trouble definitely threw us off
Can’t win ‘em all
Forget about it and focus on Indiana Friday
He made a lot of plays
Tough to win conference road games. Clary is a stud.

I paid to see them
Refs stole the show

One of these is not like the others
Frustrating, but I'll try the bright side:
— Nick P Bassill (@NickPBassill) January 17, 2024
Badgers refused to guard straight line drives, PSU hit a bunch of tough shots, refs were absolutely atrocious, and Badgers insisted on constantly turning the ball over ... and they still only lost by 4.
Oh?
You could tell in the first five minutes what the outcome would be, based on the officiating
— Jeff (@bluehighway15) January 17, 2024
We all got a job to do
Bound to happen.
— Rick Johnson (@mrjrkj) January 17, 2024
Defense was terrible.
Eric Curry was Eric Curry.
Odd
The refs reviewed a guy tripping over a camera man for a potential flagrant foul. That pretty much sums up much of what happened tonight…
— JonnoInMN (@jonnoinmn) January 17, 2024
Pivotal moment
Wonder how this one ends up if they call that block/charge on Klesmit differently (correctly)
— Chad Barman (@cdbarman) January 17, 2024
Forgot the turnovers
Not sure what was worse, the announcers, officials or Badgers defense. All were bad. Flush this one, and get ready for the Hoosiers!
— Gary Brilowski (@gbrilo) January 17, 2024
The former was key
Outplayed from the start and couldn’t overcome horrible officiating. Forget this one and move on.
— ksagendo (@ksagendo) January 17, 2024
Are they bad?
Refs were very inconsistent tonight. Also didn’t help Tyler Wahl couldn’t hit anything tonight. Hopefully this is just a one game dud and they forget about this one against a bad Penn St. team.
— Dan Buhler (@FBuhlersDayOff) January 17, 2024
But will the team?
We Are … Not forgetting this one. #Badgers pic.twitter.com/WfGKsqp6rv

Extended pressure was tough
Penn State’s defensive pressure was non-stop. Our turnovers and Max’s foul troubles hugely problematic. Seemed like they couldn’t miss a shot and we struggled to get into a consistent offensive groove. Thank heaven for Storr. Learn and move #OnWisconsin
— BethAnn Meier (@BAMeier) January 17, 2024
How it goes sometimes
Meh. It was gonna happen sooner or later in this league. PSU guards were on fire and Badgers couldn’t stay in front of them. Both teams shot well, but Nittany Lions were just a few shots better. 🤷🏻♂️
— Russ Evansen (@waunaruss) January 17, 2024
Wisconsin rushed against Marquette. Who cares? Let 'em have fun
Did Penn State really just rush the court?
— chris c (@ccnice1) January 17, 2024
Is it?
Storming the court being a non top 10 team is so embarrassing.
— Jake Manser (@jake_manser) January 17, 2024
Secondly, Wahl was horrible and Penn couldn't miss. You can't win them all. Team will learn from this. Still high on the
That's not the Wisconsin way
I will never understand the refusal to try a 2-3 zone when the other teams quick guards are getting anywhere they want driving the ball the entire game.Good quick guards, and a shot blocking big man Are problematic for this style of play
— Kirk Eastenson (@Eastyfor3) January 17, 2024
Simple fixes
Chucky Hepburn and Max Klesmit gave up too many layups to PSU guard combo. Tyler Wahl did not look like normal Tyler Wahl. Simple as that.
— Trent Tetzlaff (@ttetz5) January 17, 2024
Refreshingly rational
I always read the comments first before responding to this question.
— Kristi Conway-Powers (@NoodlesP29) January 17, 2024
Not the end of the world. Tough conference. The defense on Chucky was stinking intense. Penn State super agressive. Not the best officials but they didn't change who won the game. Lesson learned. Onward!
Out of sorts
Backcourt got dominated. Chucky gonna have to score. Hope someone ask about the 4 points Max gave up when he was afraid to foul first half.
— Ben Patton (@BenjaminP32) January 17, 2024
Certainly entertaining
Frustrating loss but it never seemed the Badgers ever had control of the game. No Chuckie points. The building is long and cold yet nobody seemed impacted by that tonight. Fun game to watch if you don’t have a tooting interest and some wild fun shots by both sides.
— mike kerry (@BadgerMike) January 17, 2024
Unreal shot-making, for sure
Still had a chance despite playing far from their best. Sloppy turnovers and some unreal shot making by Penn State did them in. And they got bad Tyler tonight.
— Tranquil Chaos (@TuckerChicken18) January 17, 2024
Eh, probably not that bad
We got absolutely smoked. Atrocious defense and a ton of TOs. Combine that with unreal guard play by Penn State and it all adds up to a bad loss. At the end of the day Penn State is a bottom 2 or 3 team in the B1G and this doesn't look good at all.
— Dominic Halbach (@AlligatorsMFIAB) January 17, 2024
Solid synopsis
The Badgers played hard and stayed in the game. In the end a combination of too many turnovers, a few missed opportunities on O, and some lapses on D were to much to overcome. Penn State came out very aggressively and we seemed flat for the the first several minutes.
— Doug Schulz (@SchulzDoug) January 17, 2024
Fair to feel that way
Cold as hell. Tuesday night in crappy State college against a team not very good. Pretty typical recipe for an upset. Hard to get kids up for games like that. Played some bad games there over the years actually. Not super surprised but disappointed.
— Mad Cat Targaryen (@hogdaddy4647) January 17, 2024
17 but who's counting?
Those 10-15 seconds UW lead the entire night were fun while it lasted.
— Bill Pfeiffer (@billt209) January 17, 2024
Could have helped
Tough loss but seemed like psu played with a bit more energy. A game like that needed more offense from chucky at the end. Look for the team to bounce back next game.
— Michael Burger (@Burgscom) January 17, 2024
Like the ice bumps on the roads
Long season. There will be nights like this. Just a lil bump in the road.
— Ryan Antony (@RyanAntony22) January 17, 2024
Defense was lax tonight. Penn State guards just did whatever they wanted. No resistance at all from Badgers perimeter defenders.
Not a bad idea
Badgers used to struggle on D with big athletic wings slashing to the rim. Tonight we got killed by jet quick small guards with smooth big city handles. A step slow all night & not great recovery/coverage. Not for nothin but would it kill us to try a zone or a 3/4 court press??
— StreamingTVRadar 🖥 | 5 Star Marketing Advisors (@badgerhugh) January 17, 2024
A lot of wrongs
Too many turnovers. Too many Penn State blocks. They had sooo many easy layups to the rim . Couldn’t stop them. Not a good game for Tyler and our best defensive player on the bench. I saw this one coming. We will rebound.
— Mary Korn Erickson (@sixtiesfan) January 17, 2024
Good in every facet
Hats off to PennSt. Not many teams beat them tonight.
— Randall Kohl (@crandallkohl) January 17, 2024
They really did
Just not their night. Led for a quick minute, but it felt like Penn St responded every time.
— Madtown Alum (@madtownalum) January 17, 2024
Oh well, onto the next one…
Time to study
Penn State played one of their best 2-3 games of the year, we didn't play our best, and hung close to the end. Disappointing loss but I think we'll see sharper D going forward after this film study
— matt, at home: Volume 3 (@mtthffmn) January 17, 2024
Kudos are in order
We got outplayed tonight. Penn State is an up-tempo team, and we’re not. We played at their pace all game and it ended up costing us. Props to them.
— B y R O N (@ByronGotGame) January 17, 2024
Give it time
How is Penn State not better record wise with those two guards?!
— 608 Madtown Joe (@608MadtownJoe) January 17, 2024
Bingo
Worse game of chucky career - no pts; got smoked on d; Tyler wahl bad game; no max hurt on d;
— MJ (@MikefromWisky) January 17, 2024
E+R=O
Defense lost us that game. Can’t give up 87 to a bad PSU team. Could cost us big time.
— NICK. (@mr_korp) January 17, 2024
Maybe a zone for them?
Tough defensive night….bounce back against IU
— aarondentz (@aarondentz) January 17, 2024
