Wisconsin men's basketball fans take aim at coaching after fifth loss in six games

  • AFerguson
  • Feb 17, 2024
  • Feb 17, 2024 Updated May 31, 2025

The Badgers blew a 13-point lead and fans took fault with several in-game decisions. What are your thoughts?

Hard to shoot over someone 4 inches taller

Klesmit has been pathetic. This guy is shooting 18% over the last 3 games. He’s to blame for this loss

— Field General (@FieldGeneral13) February 17, 2024

Again, bad matchup for Klesmit

Connor Essegian using his scholarship to be a spectator and Max Klesmitt being terrified to shoot does not bode well for this team’s future, or for Gard’s player management abilities.

— Russ Evansen (@waunaruss) February 17, 2024

Questionable is rather polite

Crushing loss after Badgers opened by making 3’s, but Josh Dix made shots to the right of the circle uncontested to keep Iowa in the game. Add Owen Freeman & Tony Perkins making plays and the Hawkeyes were the better team. Badgers defense questionable throughout the game.

— Jeff Ostach☮️ (@jeff_ostach) February 17, 2024

He may be as a Buckeye. we'll see ...

Is Lamont Paris interested in coming back to Madison?

— Ben Jones (@UpNorthBadgers) February 17, 2024

Again!

Gutless

— Abe Bresn (@AbeBresn) February 17, 2024

And the refs take is still tired

You could say this after every recent loss:

-Gard incapable of designing a timeout play. Brutal 2nd half coaching, again
-Refs absolutely dominated game
-Gilmore killing us when he's pressed into service

— Nick P Bassill (@NickPBassill) February 17, 2024

Wahl's foul trouble was critical

Carter Gilmore is a fine bench guy…hard worker…but Gard is mismanaging his minutes and the overall minutes of the roster. I realize that injuries are hurting this team, but there are none with the bigs that we are aware. Frustrating loss again…terrible call on top of it

— Todd (@pilprin) February 17, 2024

Bingo!

Bo once said, “You look awfully good when the ball goes in the basket” Wahl’s foul trouble was key. pic.twitter.com/gFb8AL2jwD

— Ken Simmons (@KenSimm56482606) February 17, 2024

Unclutch, I like it

Yet another extremely unclutch #Badgers performance leads to another terrible loss. So many chances to win it at the end of regulation and OT. Missed free throws, layups and wide open looks, and couldn't get any stops when needed. The tailspin continues.

— Mike Hockett (@mikehockett) February 17, 2024

Momentum away from the basket, too. Weird call

Gard calling timeout with 14 seconds left just to have Chucky resort to iso ball and throw up a contested 3 happens far too often to waste time drawing up a play. Quit calling timeouts cause we don’t do nothing with it

— JJ (@262jayjay) February 17, 2024

It's almost March!

Super disappointed. They had so many chances to win at the end. What has happened to Max??? How can he go from super hot to practically nothing scoring wise. Then add in the missed free throws and there is the game. I hope they can find their mojo again soon.

— Mary Korn Erickson (@sixtiesfan) February 17, 2024

Well played

I’m reversing the call on this post even though you have the floor.

Win, Wisconsin.

— Más Tequila (@JoRy_MaMa) February 17, 2024

Pulling the goaltend at that point was odd

I wouldn't have thought Storr would miss 2 layups in a row. Those shots were way better than the hero ball at the end of regulation. Max was a compete no show, that was odd. And that goaltend rule is flawed.

— Tranquil Chaos (@TuckerChicken18) February 17, 2024

Tough scene

— cali badger 🦡 (@calibadger) February 17, 2024

First half adds context

I just saw the last 15 minutes of the game. Will go back and watch from the beginning, but it is a brutal loss and this one will hurt. But i am not in the "All is lost fire Gard, bench everyone" crowd. I still find them fun to watch, and I believe in them! Ya, know, a fan.

— Kristi Conway-Powers (@NoodlesP29) February 17, 2024

The technical misses were crucial

Free throws have become an issue for some of our best free throw shooters

— Aash (@aash916) February 17, 2024

Going small with spacing could have helped

The rotation or lack of rotation seems to be playing a role in this slide. Max played a ton of minutes with only 4 points to show for it. Would have liked to have seen more Blackwell and Essegian on the floor and less Gilmore. Will ALWAYS love the Badgers, but ughhh!

— Jayme Roth (@JaymeLou5) February 17, 2024

NIT run but make the NCAA?

Wisconsin is fine, they are still considered one of the better teams in the country. They’ll turn it around they always do.

— Coach Mac (@jamchese) February 17, 2024

Some not great decisions

Gard looks lost in last 6 games. No offensive adjustments. No defensive adjustments. How do you allow Iowa to run the same high ball screen and score every play? Plus the horrible post timeout end of regulation play and decision to play Gilmore for way too many minutes.

— Badger Bob (@Badger__Bob) February 17, 2024

Could have used the Q1 win

Gotta make layups. Gotta make free throws. Gotta defend. Blown opportunity.

— Madtown Shane (@MadtownShane) February 17, 2024

Fran outcoached him with Sandfort on Klesmit alone

Don’t understand certain guys that played and didn’t play in 2nd half. we still can’t guard the high screen. Ilver needs to be in more. Why is max hesitant now? Last shot of reg..why settle for three..get it to storr if chucky doesn’t want to take it to hoop. This one is on gard.

— aarondentz (@aarondentz) February 17, 2024

An unexpected parallel with closing windows?

They are on a very similar trajectory as the Bucks. Losing to inferior teams and poor defense. They need to regroup or it will be another early exit in March.

— Madtown Alum (@madtownalum) February 17, 2024

A shame for basketball lovers

Both the Bucks and the Badgers have made bball miserable

— Michael Hybicki (@HybickiMike) February 17, 2024

Could have been fun to watch

Really wish after Wahl fouled out and even before that when he was sitting they would go to a 2 man game with Crowl and Storr.

— Jesse Y. (@JJ1986WI) February 17, 2024

Easier to take the paint away

Gilmore 15 minutes. Enough said. Iowa can’t play D and we allow them to have a defensive player sag knowing Gilmore is worthless on O. Give anyone who can score those minutes.

— Badger Guy (@BadgerGuy_) February 17, 2024

The math wasn't mathing

Chucky standing at half court running clock in a tie game when you have a 2 for 1 opportunity. Incredible.

— Big boy at the bat (@robotvevrything) February 17, 2024

Wholeheartedly agree

Our defense needs a lot of work and we can’t make inside shots. This game should have been a no questions win.

— BethAnn Meier (@BAMeier) February 17, 2024

NOPE

Last six games pic.twitter.com/dLeHlV9ELD

— Corey Otis (@CoreyWOtis) February 17, 2024

Can't do it for 40 minutes

They don't seem to want to, but they are going to have to start playing better defense

— Laura (@DieselAndMe) February 17, 2024

Tough feeling

pic.twitter.com/Fi235fdeuT

— StreamingRadarDaily🖥 | 5 Star Marketing Advisors (@badgerhugh) February 17, 2024

Well said

A well earned loss. So many missed opportunities after coming back in the 2nd half.

— ksagendo (@ksagendo) February 17, 2024

They're free!

Free Throws! FreeThrows! Free Throws!!

— Rich Hellenbrand (@rche66) February 17, 2024

Could be fun focusing on the ice

Done with this team. Time to focus on Men’s and Women’s hockey and wait for spring football

— Mark Meddings (@MeddingsMark1) February 17, 2024

Purdue was elite but, yeah, tough stretch

The exact same thing that happened last year is happening this year. It needs to be pointed out. And that’s on Gard for letting it happen again. What an embarrassing few weeks. Not even losing to good teams!

— In Development 🎯 (@j__1252) February 17, 2024

Hope on the horizon

Wisconsin basketball turning into a real buzzkill to watch. Surprised given the talent. Can’t wait until Freitag brings some much needed swag to the team.
