5 Wisconsin voices reflect on 250 years of America

We mark a milestone this week that once seemed impossible: the 250th anniversary of the United States of America.

America's 250th anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on our nation's history, celebrate its achievements and recommit ourselves to building a more just future. For me, this milestone represents both gratitude and responsibility.

America’s independence depended in part on independence of Indian tribes

During the time I served as a National Judicial College faculty member, I would occasionally teach a class on American government for visiting foreign judges. What I remember most about those classes was the immediate and shocked reaction to the idea of the judiciary as an independent and impartial third branch of government.
