Lake Geneva officials are considering working with a communications consulting firm to provide updated information to the community during an upcoming road reconstruction project.
Representatives from G. Moxie Communications of Elm Grove have submitted a $92,790 proposal to city officials to develop a communications plan to provide information about traffic routes, parking areas, access to downtown businesses and project updates during the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Highway 50/MainStreet road reconstruction project, which is scheduled to be conducted in 2027 and 2028.
Members of the Lake Geneva City Council were set to vote on the proposal Feb. 23, but unanimously approved to continue the item until their March 9 meeting for further information and discussion.
G. Moxie representatives would help city officials develop newsletters, maps, wayfinding signs, visitor guides, digital messages and media advertisements to inform residents, business owners and tourists about the project.
The information also would be distributed to Business Improvement District and VISIT Lake Geneva representatives, so they could place it on their websites and social media platforms.
"This particular firm would work with us to identify all the touch points we need to do and create the materials that need to be sent out," City Administrator David De Angelis said. "We're going to make sure we're communicating at least every other week, if not every week, as construction changes about what those changes are and how to get around."
Alderman Joel Hoiland said he is in favor of working with G. Moxie officials but wants to develop a more detailed plan for how the information is going to be distributed and who will be responsible for distributing the information before voting on the proposal.
"This proposal has excellent bones, but it needs muscle definition," Hoiland said. "Let's get the full execution strategy upfront before finalizing the communications proposal."
Alderwoman JaNelle Powers asked why representatives from the Business Improvement District and VISIT Lake Geneva are not sharing in the cost.
De Angelis said because officials from those organizations are helping the city distribute the information, and they are paying for their own informational materials that they want to produce.
"We're the government agency putting this together and we're the partners in the road project," De Angelis said. "But they're going to spend their own money doing their own marketing and doing their own informational plan." Lake Geneva officials have invited G. Moxie representatives to attend the March 9 council meeting to present more detailed information about their proposal to city aldermen.
The meeting is scheduled to be held 6 p.m. in the council chambers of the city hall building, 626 Geneva St.
Wisconsin Department of Transportation representatives are set to conduct a public information meeting regarding the road reconstruction project at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 19 in the city hall building's police training room.
